eat/share/listen with The Perennial Plate

When I first came across The Perennial Plate's foodie adventures, I fell in love with their positive and honest approach to food and travel. Their online food documentaries (made in partnership with Intrepid Food) transport you to fabulous foodie hotspots like India, China, Japan, and beyond. Here Daniel Klein and Mirra Fine (the creative minds behind the project) share their inspiration and some of their favourite things. Check out some of The Perennial Plate's recipes here.

Hope you enjoy this little insight into the couple's adventures in sustainable eating! Merci, Daniel and Mirra!

(eat) my fail-safe dish...?

Daniel Klein: Smoked lentils. I know this sounds obscure, but I make really good lentils by placing a bag of lapsung or Russian caravan tea in with the lentils. It's like adding bacon.

Mirra Fine: Daniel was skeptical when I first made this for him, but my "specialty" is pasta tossed with olive oil, salt and pepper and topped off with slices of avocado and freshly grated parmesan. I would eat it every night if it didn't result in me eating too much and laying on the couch afterwards wishing I hadn't.

(eat) favourite restaurant/cafe/bar and why…?

DK: I just ate at Etxebarri in Spain, and that was my last great meal. Really an unbelievable experience where the best ingredients are cooked over fire to perfection. So that is my favorite restaurant of the moment. But back in Minneapolis, I love to eat at Cafe Levain because the chefs are my friends, the food is simple and delicious, and sitting at the kitchen bar feels like home.

MF: I'm loving Pizzaria Lola right now. We travel internationally about every other month – and though I love immersing myself in the cuisine of the country I am visiting, by the end of my month abroad – I'm craving some serious pizza. Lola scratches that itch. It's usually our first stop after being picked up from the airport in Minneapolis.

(share) can't get through the day without...

DK: Espresso. I'm not sure what other answer exists.

MF: Crying. Just kidding, I'm fine once Daniel drinks his espresso.

(share) recent inspiring find I've discovered online...

DK: It's hard to keep track of all the great stuff out there. But limiting it to recent discoveries, we've had amazing help from some bloggers in Spain and Italy that are really great. La Tavola Marche, Parla Food and Travel, Cook, Eat all are great resources and generous people.

MF: Not food related, but a lot of what we try to capture is a person with an interesting and inspiring story. I recently saw this amazing video of a truly inspirational couple in Malaysia.

(listen) a tune I turn up on the radio... DK and MF: Anything by Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles or Otis Redding.

(listen) a quote that resonates with me...

DK: We put a quote at the end of all of our videos, so there are a lot to come to mind, but a video that is soon to come out features a particularly striking quote: "Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something is more important than fear." – Ambrose Redmoon.

MF: "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way in which its animals are treated.' – Gandhi.
