My top 5 things to do in Munich
I had a day off after promoting 'Meine französische Küche' (click here to enter my German book giveaway!) to explore Munich. Here are my top 5 favourite things to do:
1. Have a bretzel: It's hard not to spot them. Bretzels are sold in bakeries, little stands on the street and at the Gasthof. They're even better when they've been sliced in half and buttered in the middle.
2. Head to Viktualienmarkt: A bustling market with stands selling everything from sausages, flowers, cheese and local delicacies. The 'Schrannenhalle' is a covered market is just next door, plus there are plenty of places to sit down and watch the world go by.
3. Have a walk through the English garden: Munich's answer to Central Park (although it's actually bigger), with a beer garden and Chinese Pagoda that has a band playing traditional Bavarian music at the weekend. You can also spot surfers riding the Eisbach stream (I know, pretty crazy!) that flows through the park.
4. Go to a local Gasthof for some hearty Bavarian food: There are plenty to choose from. I went here and here and wasn't disappointed. Warning: portions tend to be on the larger side.
5. Check out the amazing deli Dallmayr: for some old school Bavarian flavours. Right next door is Manufactum which has an amazing selection of household products, as well as a lovely bakery.
