On My Bookshelf – Steal Like An Artist
When we talk about creativity, we usually jump towards the conclusion that all ideas must be fresh, original and totally unique. However, in reality, is this ever truly the case? Take a recipe for example. We draw on other people's culinary techniques, cultural ideas surrounding food and existing recipes, before we can really come up with something new.
Lately, I've been dipping into Austin Kleon's awesome book 'Steal Like An Artist'. This illustrated guide to living a creative life is packed full of anecdotes and tips that can be applied to all aspects of creativity. A pocket-sized gem, this little book discusses how all good ideas draw inspiration from other sources, people, art and previous ideas.
It's easy to read (let's face it – sometimes all you have is literally three minutes to flip through a couple of pages before tumbling into bed, so a quick and uncomplicated read is always a welcome addition to my bookshelf), and Austin manages to hone in on some fabulous secrets and suggestions.
He encourages creatives to 'stand next to the talent' and to remember that 'you're only going to be as good as the people that you surround yourself with'. He explains that embracing other people's ideas is a good place to start when looking for inspiration.
Austin promotes curiosity, a playful approach to creativity, and above all – he reminds us that we make art (cue food, fashion, writing, design...whatever shape your own personal creativity takes), because we like art. Sounds simple right? But sometimes we need to be reminded why we do what we love.
Whether you're feeling a bit stuck for new ideas and inspiration, or you're simply looking for a concise and positive read, 'Steal Like An Artist' is sure to grab your interest and get you thinking about where your next fab idea might come from.
